Unity

(Mike Lazarev CR02 REDUCTION)

Label: 1631 Recordings
Date: April 14, 2023

With this interpretation of Diana Yukawa’s original composition, I allow rhythm, perfect tuning, and flawless classical execution to drift between their boundaries freely

My further treatment of running this recording through an old chromium dioxide-treated cassette reduced the elemental particles of her beautiful violin melody into a slowly dissolving echo of the often rigid approach to classical music

The sounds fade away as if the tape is melting in the player, and it’s the last time you will hear this lovely music…

This rework takes Unity to another realm, one in which I’m grateful to visit. It’s incredible to have your music reimagined, taking you on an unexpected journey where you meet your creation again, but as if for the first time.
— DIANA YUKAWA
Drawing on his wide-ranging interests from contemporary classical to ambient, drone, and electronic music, Lazarev deftly applies tape processing techniques to haunting effect, transforming the waltzing beauty of the original into a poignant study in ephemerality frozen in sonic amber.
